Corporal Kevin van de Rijdt was killed in action on 6 September 2009 by small-arms fire during combat operations in Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan. Each year, his friends and relatives honour his memory during a memorial march from the Oosterbeek War Cemetery to his birthplace, Venray, where a monument has been erected in his honour. The march is 44 miles long and is completed overnight, continuing into the following morning.
